Financial literacy

Do you remember…

the first allowance your parents gave you? What did you do with it? Were you tempted to make that big-ticket purchase right away? I know I was. I spent all my accumulated allowance in my first two years in Secondary school on a ticket to see Twice, my favorite K-pop group. That CAT2 ticket? Way beyond my budget! Luckily, I had some savings stashed away from years of Chinese New Year money that came to the rescue.

Without that little savings foundation, I would have missed such a memorable experience. At first, I presumed I was smart enough to put those funds into a “high-interest” savings account, which helped grow my capital a little. But after that once-in-a-lifetime experience, I felt like my wallet had taken a serious hit. It got me thinking—was it worth it? How could I make sure I could afford more of these moments without burning much of my savings?

Inspiration?

It was then that I realized something important: I wasn’t ambitious enough with my financial goals. Sure, I had savings, but I lacked the financial knowledge to grow them properly. So, like many others, I turned to the internet. I devoured resources like MoneySense, CPF, and Woke Salaryman. But soon, I found myself overloaded with information and with nowhere to apply it. Plus, it dawned on me that there was a noticeable gap in the education system when it came to teaching financial literacy to young people. Fortunately, with my supportive parents and consulting professionals, I understood financial literacy to a much higher standard. If I’d known what I know now, I could’ve afforded a VIP ticket instead of settling for CAT2.
